Where do Afircan Reed Frogs come from?
They live in open wooded areas, gardens and other grasslands in African, south of the Sahara. Found close to water, but not in deserts or rain forests.
You need to provide a temperature of 28 – 32C (82.4 – 89.6F) throughout the year. I would personally use a heat mat/strip along the back of the tank or possibly a low basking bulb. These little frogs need spraying with water every day to which vitamins and minerals should be added. A small pool of water should be placed in the tank, this will help to keep the air humidity relatively high.
How do I keep African Reed Frogs?
Yes, if you have the correct set-up and already gained some experience with amphibians.
A glass tank is needed for this species, you need to provide at least a quarter of the ground area with a deep pool of rainwater approx. 4″ deep. A range of live plants throughout the tank is ideal, but artificial plants can also be used. A soil, bark chips and moss substrate can be used for the remaining ground area, with some cork bark for decor. Although these frogs are nocturnal, they regularly bask in the sun.
Feed them a varied diet of small insects purchased from either your local pet shop or via this site (live food section). Alternatively, you can use fresh, clean rainwater!
